Bexley Farmers' Market: September 20th

"Food should be fun."

Thomas Keller

This past weekend at the Houston Hot Sauce Festival, a handful of chilehead judges tasted dozens of salsas from across the country in a Texas-style, shoot-'em-up salsa contest. This competition was held not only to give a few companies bragging rights, but also to raise both awareness and money for the Snowdrop Foundation, a worthy organization dedicated to assisting patients and families at Texas Children's Cancer Center.

So why do we care about a salsa contest in Houston? Meet Chuck Evans' MONTEZUMA Brand Sauces & Salsas. Chuck took first place in the "Best Fruit-Based Salsa" category for his Smokey Chipotle Raspberry Lime Salsa.

Visit the Bexley Farmers' Market and help us congratulate Chuck on his latest national honor!

How does shopping at a farmers market help my local economy?

Farmers markets generate business, and business creates jobs. A 2011 Economic Research Service report found that fruit and vegetable farms selling into local and regional markets employ 13 fulltime workers per $1 million in revenue earned, for a total of 61,000 jobs in 2008. Comparatively, fruit and vegetable farms that are not selling locally employed only three full-time workers per $1 million in revenue.

Farmers markets also bring business to neighboring stores and communities where the market is located. Spending money at farmers markets keeps your money in circulation within the local community, preserving and creating local jobs. This is very different from many major grocery stores where a large percentage of sales leave the community, and possibly even the state or the region.

Support your farmers, artisans, and your community at the Bexley Farmers' Market!

Bexley Farmers' Market: August 30th

“In spite of food fads, fitness programs, and health concerns, we must never lose sight of a beautifully conceived meal.”

Julia Child

Why should I shop at a farmers market when my supermarket sells organic, and sometimes even local food?

Stonefield Naturals at the Bexley Farmers' Market
While some food retailers do carry local and organic products, not all of them can carry a variety of local foods, or ensure a fair price to the farmer. Shopping at a farmers market is a wholly unique experience that benefits farmers and producers directly (they go home with a greater share of the retail price than they would by selling wholesale, where the margins are, well, just that– marginal), offering you more unique products, more heirloom varieties, and more opportunities to build relationships and learn about healthy eating. Farmers markets are a community experience, where you can meet your neighbors, friends, and farmers, and where more of your dollar will stay in the community.

Support your community by visiting the Bexley Farmers' Market each Thursday!

Bexley Farmers' Market: August 9th

"Watermelon--it's a good fruit. You eat, you drink, you wash your face."

Enrico Caruso

Happy National Farmers Market Week!

United States Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack proclaimed August 5-11, 2012 as National Farmers Market Week. Since 2000, the number of recorded farmers markets has grown over 170%, from 2,863 markets in 2000 to more than 7,800 in 2012. As demand grows for fresh local food, and shoppers seek relationships with the farms that make such food possible, farmers markets represent an important retail option that bolster local economies in communities large and small.

"Farmers markets are the ultimate green sector of the economy,” says Bernadine Prince, President of the Farmers Market Coalition. “They are stand-out successes in and spurring sustainable economic development. During Farmers Market Week, FMC encourages everyone to spend at least $10 at a local farmers market, and celebrate the power of farmers markets to incubate entrepreneurship and nourish both rural and urban economies.”

Bexley Farmers' Market: July 26th

“If you eat, you’re involved in agriculture.”

Wendell Berry

On Tuesday, July 24th, Ohio First Lady Karen W. Kasich and Ohio Agriculture Director David T. Daniels recognized Women in Ohio Agriculture at the Governor's Residence in Bexley, Ohio.

“These Ohio women have had an incredible impact on our state’s largest industry,” said Mrs. Kasich, who announced the creation of the award during last year’s Ohio State Fair. “It is an honor to recognize them today for their strength, leadership, and outstanding contributions.”

Among the nominees was our very own Kathy Rhoads from Rhoads Farm. Rhoads Farm has been a fixture in the central Ohio community since 1958, and Kathy is a true agricultural advocate. Read more about Kathy and Rhoads Farm in the Spring 2011 issue of Edible Columbus.

Bexley Farmers' Market: July 19th

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

Virginia Woolf

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 18th and come swap your homemade food goods. Join your Columbus neighbors for the first Eastside Food Swap.

What's a food swap? A food swap is an event where a bunch of people bring homemade foods (mostly preserved or otherwise storable foods) to barter for other people's homemade foods. For example, you might have gone overboard and made 10 jars of strawberry jam and you're thinking, "What am I going to do with all this strawberry jam?" Your neighbor is thinking, "What am I going to do with these 10 bottles of tarragon flavored vinegar?" If you both bring half your jars to the food swap and switch them out for foods you want, everybody wins!

Bexley Farmers' Market: July 5th

Happy Independence Day!

Take your connection to the market one step further--volunteer at the Bexley Farmers' Market!

Need a reason to volunteer? How about five of them:

1. Get to know our vendors. At a farmers market you can get to know the people who grow, raise, bake, preserve and prepare your food. You'll learn their names, where they do their work, and what life is like for them. And they get to know you too!

2. Make new friends. Studies show that you’re 10 times more likely to have a meaningful conversation at a farmers market than at a regular grocery store. We're sure you'll have plenty to talk about with like-minded market goers.

3. Give back to your community. Community service and volunteerism are an investment in our community and the people who live in it.

4. Get outside! Volunteering at a farmers market can be a chore--or it can be a splendid, outdoor experience in a colorful friendly environment. At the Bexley Farmers' Market, it's the latter of the two!

5. Understand what local means. Part of the pleasure of volunteering (and shopping) at your local market is developing an appreciation of fresh, local foods at the height of their natural season.

Bexley Farmers' Market: June 28th

One of the secrets, and pleasures, of cooking is to learn to correct something if it goes awry; and one of the lessons is to grin and bear it if it cannot be fixed.

Julia Child

Summer can officially begin... SWEET CORN is here!

There are dozens of ways to cook sweet corn, and most of us have our preferred method, but how about things you shouldn't do to corn? Here are three things you should not do when cooking sweet corn:

  • Don't add salt to the water. It only toughens the corn when it cooks.
  • Don't cool off hot corn by running under cold water. It will make the corn soggy.
  • Don't overcook or the kernels will get hard and the corn will loose some of its sweet flavor.
Visit the Bexley Farmers' Market for your first taste of summer!

Bexley Farmers' Market: June 14th

When a man's stomach is full it makes no difference whether he is rich or poor.

Euripides

Market season is in full swing! Here are five tips for getting the most from your farmers' market:

Bring your own bags and baskets. By bringing your own bags, you reduce waste at the market and in your own home.

Bring cash and small bills. By bringing cash and – specifically – small bills, you keep money in your farmer’s pocket and you make it easier for him to make change for the masses of folks who bring nothing but $20 bills from the nearby ATM.

Go early, but not too early. The best stuff goes fast. A farmer may only have a single flat of ripe, juicy blackberries or a couple of pounds of fresh green peas, so arrive early to make sure you get the best pick of the market’s high-demand, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Ask questions. When you're at the Bexley Farmers' Market, you're talking with the person who grew the food, or one that works on the farm. Take the time to ask questions. What are your cows eating? Are your vegetables organic? Is your farm ever open to the public? Do you grow what you sell? Ask questions.

Know the crop calendar. If you want to eat in season, you need to respect the seasons. Part of the pleasure of shopping at your local market is developing an appreciation of fresh, local foods at the height of their natural season.

Bexley Farmers' Market: May 24th

You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces--just good food from fresh ingredients.

Julia Child

Need a reason to shop the Bexley Farmers' Market? How about five of them...

Know the origin of your food. The products you buy at the Bexley Farmers' Market travel less than 75 miles to arrive at market. Compare that to the national average of 1,500 miles for products sold in the grocery store.

Try something new. The Bexley Farmers' Market represents more than 12 different product categories including dog food, fresh flowers, and artisan breads to name a few.

Support locally owned businesses. The Bexley Farmers' Market supports more than 18 vendors in business, employing more than 25 people each week.

Get to know your producer. You can ask questions and learn about the products you buy. How was the animal raised? What did the animal eat? When were the strawberries picked? What kind of flour is in the bread? (And chances are, you're asking the farmer or producer themselves.)

Fresh food is better for you. Fresh fruits and vegetables start to lose vitamins and nutrients as soon as they are harvested. Because most of the items you buy at the farmers' market are harvested hours before market, they have more of what we need most.

2012 Applications Available

The Bexley Farmers' Market is a destination committed to building local food tradition through access, education, and community outreach. Applications for 2012 are now available. We invite you to consider joining us!

About the Bexley Farmers' Market
The Bexley Farmers’ Market will open on Thursday, May 17th and be held rain or shine through October 25th from 4-7PM. The market is located in a vacant lot at the corner of Parkview Avenue and Main Street in Southeast Bexley across from the new Gateway South residential and commercial development. It is a large and flexible lot that offers a great deal of visibility to the market.

About Bexley
Bexley is one of Columbus’ oldest suburbs, located on the near East side of downtown. It is an established community that is constantly evolving. The city has a commitment to excellence and maintains its old time charm while promoting progress. Bexley’s own rapidly developing Main Street commercial corridor welcomes residents and visitors to the historic Drexel Theatre, wide-ranging dining options, art venues, and unique shopping destinations. Adding a farmers’ market to the Main Street corridor further enhances this mix.

The quality of life in Bexley includes:
  • a well-educated, engaged, multi-generational, and diverse populace
  • nine churches and five synagogues
  • a stable, established, and responsive municipality
  • a long tradition of excellence within the Bexley Public Schools
The Bexley Farmers' Market is looking for a vibrant and diverse mix of local farmers and food artisans. To be considered a potential market vendor, please email us at info@bexleyfarmersmarket.com. Applications are due by Wednesday, February 29th.
If you have any questions, please contact Market Manager, Jaime Moore at (614) 327-0102 or email us at info@bexleyfarmersmarket.com.

Thank you for your consideration and interest in this effort.
